ANDROID smartphones are not only user-friendly but also good for
multitasking as they can run several applications simultaneously, writes
SITI SYAMEEN MD KHALILI.



WHAT is so cool about Android smartphones? For software
developers and manufacturers, it´s the flexibility to deliver a myriad
of programs and applications into a variety of designs and features. For
consumers, Android is user-friendly given its simple, icon-based
interface design and good for multitasking as it is capable of running
multiple applications simultaneously.

Here´s 10 popular Android-based devices.

1. Samsung Galaxy S
Samsung GT-i9000 or Galaxy S´s defining specifications include a
4-inch Super AMOLED screen and 1GHz application processor. It comes with
TouchWiz 3.0 user-interface, rich augmented reality browser called
Layar and Swype, a fast text entry service. Other features include
mobile Digital Natural Image Engine (mDNIe), 5-megapixel AF camera, 16GB
microSD memory, accelerometer and proximity sensors, HD video player
and recorder along with Music Player with Sound Alive.


2. HTC Desire
Desire is easily noticeable, given its large and sharp 3.7-inch
AMOLED screen. Powered by a 1GHz fast processor, 1,400 mAh Lithium-ion
battery and Android with HTC Sense OS, this gadget is made to handle
mobile gaming, multimedia playback and fast Internet browsing over HSDPA
or Wi-Fi connectivity.


3. HTC Hero
Sporting a 3.2-inch screen, this device is set to save you from
boredom with its 5-megapixel camera, multimedia player and FM radio. If
that does not cure it, surf the internet using Wi-Fi or 3G connectivity
and at the same time try the model´s dedicated Search and navigation
buttons. The Hero also offers up to 28 custom screens to suit your
style, mood and preferences.


4. HTC Legend
Operating on Android 2.1 and HTC Sense, the Legend offers a feature
called Friend Stream, where all your contacts and communication threads
is merged into a single screen. Encased in a single-block aluminium
casing, this device also offers HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB
connectivity, GPS, G-sensor, 3.2-inch display and a 5-megapixel camera.

5. HTC Tattoo

This HSDPA-enabled phone offers 2.8-inch screen and 3.2- megapixel
camera in its 113g body. Apart from GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
connectivity as well as a microSD card, this model also offers users a
chance to further personalise their phone with pictures, apps and
widgets of their choice on the Home screen. On the outside, this phone
can be tattooed with your own design on its clip on custom outer cover.


6. Motorola Backflip
Available in Australia and Singapore, Motorola Backflip offers
MotoBlur, a feature that lets you stream your emails and social networks
into one feed and BackTrack, a behind-scene nav tool. With reverse flip
design, you can immediately switch to table-top mode. Its 5-megapixel
camera, full QWERTY keypad and 3.1 touchscreen add value to its design,
while music lovers can also enjoy music using Bluetooth headset or 3.5mm
stereo earpieces.


7. Acer beTouch E120
An affordable Android, the Acer beTouch E120 rides on the ST Ericsson
PNX6715 processor. Featuring a 2.8-inch QVGA resistive touchscreen, 3.2
megapixel camera and various connectivity options including 3G , Wi-Fi,
Bluetooth, Micro-USB, this device also offer GPS and AGPS.


8. Acer beTouch E400
Powered by Qualcomm MSM7227 processor and equipped with a 3.2-inch
HVGA resistive touch screen, this 12mm thin model also comes with a
3.2-megapixel camera, G-sensor and a 2GB memory card. Designed to
facilitate web surfing and media streaming.

9. Acer liquid E S100

This Android-based model employs the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8520
processor and a 3.5-inch WVGA capacitive touch screen. Adding more zest
to its specs list are features such as 5-megapixel camera, G-sensor,
ambient light and proximity sensors as well as E-compass.

10. Acer liquid E Ferrari

The 135g Ferrari red model offers 3.5-inch capacitive touch screen,
768mHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 3G connectivity, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
and GPS. Designed to aid social networking, mobile gaming and Internet
browsing, its package also comes with a 8GB memory card. You can also
opt for a matching set of Bluetooth headset.
